How To Make a Double Crochet Stitch

The double crochet, often shortened to dc, is a common basic stitch that is taller than a half double crochet and works up quickly. It creates a more open, flexible fabric, which makes it useful for blankets, scarves, garments, and many decorative crochet patterns.

Below you can check a step-by-step tutorial on how to make half double crochet stitches.

Step 1. You will start from a working position, with the working yarn (the yarn marked with a red line in the image on the left) in front of the hook, and yarn over first. After that insert the hook in the next stitch. You will be left with 4 loops on the hook at this stage.

Step 2. With the 4 loops on the hook, you will yarn over again, but pull the yarn through just the closest 2 loops to the tip of the hook. These 2 will be the loops that represent the stitch you inserted your hook into. After this, you should have 3 loops on your hook.

Step 3. Yarn over again, then pull the yarn through the next 2 of the 3 loops on the hook. You should now have 2 loops on your hook.

Step 4. You will yarn over one last time and pull the yarn through the last 2 loops left on the hook. In the end, you will have just one loop left, and Congratulations! You have completed your first double crochet stitch.

To better view the effect of this type of stitch, you can see below an entire row of DC stitches, making 2 DC in each stitch from the row before. You can see how much bigger the row is than the first ones, which only have SC stitches.

Double crochet is a great stitch when you want height, speed, and a softer drape than single crochet. Once you get used to the rhythm, it becomes one of the easiest and one of the most useful stitches to work, as it is indeed used quite often in crochet patterns.
